WORKSHOP: ENCOUNTERING JEWISH MYSTICISM - AN INTRODUCTION

All religions begin with a mystical experience, a direct contact with what is experienced as a higher or deeper level of reality: a superior power or being—something or someone from “somewhere else” other than our conscious, individual self. This overwhelming experience has been described as “the inbreaking of the divine.”

As that experience fades, the new faith eventually turns into that cliché, “organized religion,” which so many people today want nothing to do with. And that is when new mystical movements appear within a religion. The mystics seek to regain the immediate experience of another dimension of reality that created and fueled the religion in the first place. Jewish mysticism is no different.

Rabbi Bernie Kling will guide us through many manifestations of the Jewish quest to experience the divine.
