Semi-Annual Taize' Service

Not our usual service! During today's service, we honored and thanked the veterans in our community for the precious gift of their service to our country and prayed for peace. The remainder of the morning was a in the Taizé style service of music and meditation.

In 1940, Brother Roger Schütz founded a refuge in Taizé, France for those displaced by the scourge of war. There he developed a style of worship and singing to engage those with diverse spiritual practices, linguistic abilities, and cultural backgrounds within the community. It emphasizes singing and chanting involving few words, simple melodies, and much repetition, as well as periods of meditation and contemplation. Unity of Charlottesville holds a service in the Taizé style twice a year, typically in the spring and fall.
