During the first hour of this workshop, we'll experiment with a few non-standard tunings in order to discover the delightful and unexpected sounds that can occur when you change the pitches of some of the strings. We'll also look at chord shapes that work well in several tunings. In the second hour, we'll explore how open tunings can be useful in accompanying Irish music. Chord selection and rhythmic structure will be discussed.
  • Price: $25.00 Quantity:
In this workshop Grey will share traditional Irish tunes from the repertoire of melodeon player Michael J. Kennedy (1900 - 1978). The tunes work well on all melody instruments, so all melody players are invited. This repertoire is unusual in several respects. Some tunes are "crooked,” meaning that certain phrases contain fewer or more beats than we expect. Some are in rhythms not heard much today, such as a number of schottisches and a version of the slip jig "Rocky Road to Dublin" that is in 18/8 time. The melodies tend to be angular and stark, and he played them in a largely unadorned style.
